Maurice Rowntree

Maurice Lotherington Rowntree (1882-1944) contributed many important writings to the work of the War and Social Order Committee. His book Co-operation or Chaos?, published by the Committee in 1917 and very widely distributed among Friends, contains extended discussion of many of the issues raised in the Foundations. Rowntree had studied theology at Oxford and in Germany, and was assistant warden and lecturer at the Swarthmore Educational Centre in Leeds. A conscientious objector, he was imprisoned several times during the war and was later a key figure in the Peace Pledge Union.
