Joseph Stephenson Rowntree (1875-1951) was a Liberal politician and served as mayor of Harrogate from 1911 to 1913. He was the younger brother of John Wilhelm Rowntree, and the son of Joseph Rowntree – like them, he has a biography on the website of the Rowntree Society. Besides the War and Social Order Committee, he also served on a number of other Quaker and associated committees, of which the most significant are probably the Northern Friends Peace Board (still active under that name) and the Yorkshire Friends’ Service Committee (originally the Yorkshire 1905 Committee, later Quaker Outreach Yorkshire, and now the Outreach Projects Committee of Quakers in Yorkshire).
